Marset Outdoor

In any conversation relating to contemporary outdoor lighting, the name Marset is bound to be mentioned. For decades, the Barcelona-based designer lighting brand has been stunning the industry with its clean, timeless designs, remarkably innovative shapes, fusion of materials, and state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques. Marset Lighting overdelivers by providing its clients with outdoor lighting products envisioned by world-renowned designers who, in turn, partner with expert artisans who exercise rigorous attention to detail. Together, they create outdoor lighting that surprises, thrills, and – perhaps most importantly – endures, so that it can contribute to a more sustainable and luminous world.

All Marset lamps are made by skilled craftspeople who take part in the entire production process – from the genesis of conceptual drawings on paper, and all the way to the kiln, the die-cutter, and, at last, the finishing table. Quality control is also performed in-house, allowing Marset to oversee each piece to fruition… and perfection.  Marset also requires its designers to incorporate environmental responsibility into their toolkits – which the company views as imperative for the future of the planet.

Whether you’re looking for pendants, floor lamps, ceiling lamps, chandeliers, table lamps, portable lamps, wall lamps, or lighting accessories for the patio, terrace, gardens, or outdoor dining area of your home or design project, Marset has you covered. But Marset does more than produce lighting products; it thoroughly considers the concept of light and all its various nuances and effects. As a result, Marset Lighting’s creations improve people’s quality of life by creating enhanced outdoor experiences through illumination. As Marset explores the outdoors, it seeks to build a relationship between its collections and the elements: the vegetation, architecture, and the landscape itself.

When asked why Marset decided to “step into the garden” and design outdoor lamps, Barcelona-born Joan Gaspar, Marset’s Head of Design – who has worked with the company since 1996 – responded: “We want our product philosophy to be close to these outdoor spaces, closer to landscaping, but in the end, our products are part of a whole. We don’t seek to make architecture with light, but rather, to accompany and enhance architecture without wanting to change its physiognomy. Conceptually, we maintain our principles of design and matter, giving prominence to these spaces, both day and night, as is the case with our interior line.”

History

Marset was officially founded in 1976 by Paco Marset, who transformed his family’s metal-casting business from the 1940s into the lighting brand we know today. By the 1990s, Marset began gaining recognition for its high quality and unmatched design. During this period, the third generation of family members used this positioning to expand the company’s reach internationally. Recently, Marset moved to its new 118,000-square-foot headquarters in Terrassa, just outside of Barcelona. This new workplace accompanies Marset’s showrooms in Barcelona, Milan, and Cologne, plus its U.S. headquarters in New York City.

Materials

Over the years, Marset Lighting has risen to its renowned level of excellence through constant exploration, unfailingly placing value on the behavior of the materials it uses. Ceramics, wood, glass, polycarbonate, and textiles are all elements that express unique personality in the forming of Marset lamps. Marset particularly pays attention to materials for its outdoor collections, ensuring that they are durable enough to withstand the exterior environments. Therefore, many outdoor pieces undergo stainless antioxidant cataphoresis treatments to protect them from the elements.

Designers

What separates Marset outdoor lighting from its competitors is its courageous approach to design innovation. The company believes – and rightly so – that collaborating with the most talented and revered creatives in the industry is much more than endorsing their designs; it’s about trusting their talent and giving them the green light to discover new paths and explore new ideas that bring meaning to – and heighten – the brand. Marset’s star-studded array of outdoor lighting design partners includes:

  • Joan Gaspar (Cala, Plaff-On!, Roc, Soho, TXL 2019, and Jaima, winner of the 2018 Design Plus Award and Interior Design‘s 2017 Best of the Year Award)
  • German-born Spanish designer Christophe Mathieu (LaFlaca)
  • Milan-born Marco Zanuso Jr. (Babila)
  • Valencia-based multidisciplinary design firm Sputnik Studio (Santorini)
  • Spanish interior and industrial designer Francesc Rifé (Lab)

Marset’s prominent outdoor lighting projects include Mercer Hotel in Barcelona; Alfonso XIII Hotel in Seville; the Goulandris Natural History Museum in Athens; Hotel Le Ballu and Le 5 Code Hotel in Paris; Grand Palladium Resort in Ibiza; and Casa Grande Hotel in La Rioja, Spain.
