For outdoor furniture, the choice of material is not based on aesthetic considerations alone; it is also geared toward functional aspects of use, comfort, maintenance, economy, and durability. As such, Extremis employs cutting-edge processes, and only the highest-quality materials in the construction of its products. “We don’t design furniture on the basis of a specific aesthetic signature,” says Extremis founder and lead designer Dirk Wynants. “Our whole process works the other way around. We start with a problem and look for solutions, and only then do we choose our materials to serve the needs of the design.”
Wynants remains Extremis’ lead designer. He has also collaborated with other notable international designers, including Dutch designer Arnold Merckx, creator of the Extempore Collection; Brussels-based sculptor and furniture designer Xavier Lust, creator of the Picnik Collection; Belgian designers Koen Baeyens, Stijn Goethals, and Basile Graux who are the minds behind the Romeo & Juliet Collection; the design duo of Hsu-Li Teo and Stefan Kaiser who together comprise the Australian architect collective Globalhaus; and Australian-Dutch designer Danny Venlet, whose contribution to Extremis’ outstanding luxury outdoor catalog is the Icecube Collection.
